Custom Instructions — Set It and Forget It

Every time you start a new chat, ChatGPT knows nothing about you. Custom Instructions fix this permanently. Go to Settings → Personalization → Custom Instructions and you'll find two text boxes.

The first asks what ChatGPT should know about you — your job, writing style, level of expertise. The second asks how you want it to respond — concise or detailed, casual or formal, with examples or without.

Memory: The Feature Nobody Actually Manages

ChatGPT's Memory feature can remember your name, preferences, and ongoing projects across sessions. But most users just leave it on and never touch it — which means it accumulates random facts and outdated information.

The smarter approach is to actively manage it. Go to Settings → Personalization → Manage Memory to review, edit, or delete what ChatGPT has stored.

• Correct outdated info by telling ChatGPT: "Forget that I work at [old place]. I now work at [new place]."
• Use Temporary Chat when you don't want a session to influence memory at all
• Override memory for one conversation by starting your message with: "For this conversation only…"

The single best thing you can do right now: open Memory settings and delete anything outdated. A clean memory means sharper, more relevant responses.

Canvas — Your Hidden Writing & Code Studio

Canvas is a side-by-side editing environment that most ChatGPT users have never intentionally opened. It's designed for longer writing and coding projects that need multiple rounds of revision — think essays, blog drafts, scripts, or functions.

For longer tasks, ChatGPT may open Canvas automatically. But you can trigger it yourself by typing: "Open this in Canvas" or "Use Canvas for this."

Unlike a regular chat, Prism keeps your document, notes, and AI collaboration in one space. You can draft, revise, and refine without losing context across sessions.

Study Mode — ChatGPT Asks You Questions

This one is a game-changer for students. Study Mode flips the usual dynamic — instead of you asking ChatGPT for answers, ChatGPT uses Socratic questioning to guide you toward the answer yourself.

It's available on the web and mobile apps, accessible from the tools section near the chat box. You can also ask: "Quiz me on [topic] using Study Mode."

It uses Python's code interpreter behind the scenes, but you interact with it in plain English.

The Privacy Setting Most People Don't Know Exists

Under Settings → Data Controls, there's a toggle called "Improve the model for everyone." On some account types, your conversations may by default be used to help train future AI models — and most people have never consciously made a choice about this.

If you're pasting client work, business documents, health information, or anything sensitive into ChatGPT — you should know this setting exists.

• This doesn't affect ChatGPT's quality for you — only whether your chats train future models
